Haftsin
Sabzeh: sprouted grass for birth and renewal, Sib: apples for health and beauty, Serkeh: vinegar for wisdom and patience, Senjed: dried fruit for love, Seer: garlic for medicine, Samanu: sweet pudding for wealth and fertility, Sumac: a Persian spice for a new day. The Haft-Sin table is an arrangement of seven symbolic items starting with the Persian letter “sin”. The table arrangement symbolizes hope and good luck for the coming year. The centerpiece of my collection, a two-pieced velvet top and skirt represents my version of a Haft-Sin, which includes many of the traditional items along with more modern additions commonly found amongst Iranian families. Hand-painted, then digitally printed, this non-traditional creation still has a familiar feel to a classic Persian textile, but with a modern and colorful twist.
